Cantilever Optioneering

Various structural options for achieving long span cantilevers include cantilevered beams/slabs with backspans, backstays, vierendeel structures and more

There are various structural options for achieving long or short-span cantilevers. Very short cantilevers with low loads can usually be achieved by extending the slabs by a few metres, ensuring a continuous backspan. Longer cantilevers may require beams to provide better stiffness, or other more creative solutions.

The graphic below illustrates common structural solutions to providing cantilevers, and depend on the various structural and architectural design constraints. This is not meant to be an exclusive list but hopefully a helpful guide for structural engineers and architects.
