IStructE Core Objective 01: Professional Standards and Responsibilities

This objective was previously the former 1.1 Institution objective, focusing on your knowledge of the IStructE and what it does. With the revised 2023 Core Objectives, this is now extended to cover your engagement with the wider industry, to demonstrate your CPD commitments and your knowledge of professional conduct.

This is one of the easier objectives in the list to demonstrate, so best to fill in your report form ASAP!

What to Write in Your Report

Some suggestions to include in your form are listed below. We suggest to include at least 4 or 5 of these:

1. I am aware of the IStructE's history and structure
2. I am aware of and adhere to the institutions code of conduct
3. I regularly read The Structural Engineer magazine and/or Structures Journal.
4. I regularly read and take part in the IStructE Online Community Form 
5. I attend at least three events per year run by the IStructE or similar bodies
6. I am part of the IStructE's Elevate mentoring programme
7. I have attended an IStructE AGM / committee meeting
8. I have attended a course run by the IStructE (like the exam preparation course)
9. I am involved in the IStructE's Young Member Group (YMG), Study Groups or I am a part of one of the IStructE's Panel groups.

What to Include in Your Portfolio

We would suggest including the following, if appropriate:

1. Continual Professional Development (CPD) Record

2. Minutes of any meetings / AGMs you have attended

3. A document or material which you may have presented at an IStructE or other event, with relevance to structural engineering.
